Hoarding >> How To Clear Clutter And Emotional Baggage

Clutterers Anonymous (CLA) is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength, and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem with clutter and help each other to recover. We achieve this as individuals, groups, and a fellowship by practicing our 12 Steps of recovery and How To Clear Clutter And Emotional Baggage by being guided by our 12 Traditions.

Each of them embodies a set of principles for living life effectively, How To Clear Clutter And Emotional Baggage inside and outside CLA. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop cluttering. There are no dues or fees for membership; we are self-supporting through our own 7th Tradition contributions, neither soliciting nor accepting outside donations.

Our fellowship is based on suggestion, interchange of experience, rotation of leadership and service. CLA is not affiliated with any public or private organization, political movement, ideology, or religious doctrine; How To Clear Clutter And Emotional Baggage we take no position on outside issues. Our primary purpose is to stop cluttering one day at a time and to carry this message of recovery to clutterers who still suffer.

We admitted we were powerless over clutter -- that our lives had become unmanageable. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. Made a decision to turn our will How To Clear Clutter And Emotional Baggage and our lives over to the care of God as we understood God. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. Humbly asked God to remove our shortcomings. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, How To Clear Clutter And Emotional Baggage and became willing to make amends to them all. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood God, praying only for the knowledge of God's will for us and the power to carry that out. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to others, How To Clear Clutter And Emotional Baggage and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

TWELVE TRADITIONS of CLA 1. Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon CLA unity.2. For our group purpose there is but one ultimate authority -- a loving God as expressed through our group conscience. Our leaders are but trusted servants; How To Clear Clutter And Emotional Baggage they do not govern.3. The only requirement for CLA membership is a desire to stop cluttering.

4. Each group should be autonomous except in matters affecting other groups or CLA as a whole.5. Each group has but one primary purpose -- to carry its message to the person who still suffers.6. A CLA group ought never endorse, finance, How To Clear Clutter And Emotional Baggage or lend the Clutterers Anonymous name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property, or prestige divert us from our primary purpose.

7. Every CLA group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions.8. Clutterers Anonymous should remain forever non-professional, How To Clear Clutter And Emotional Baggage but our service centers may employ special workers.9. Clutterers Anonymous, as such, ought never be organized, but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve.

10. CLA has no opinion on outside issues; hence the Clutterers Anonymous name ought never be drawn into public controversy.11. Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, films, television, and all other media. 12. Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions, How To Clear Clutter And Emotional Baggage ever reminding us to place principles before personalities.

At each meeting, How To Clear Clutter And Emotional Baggage it is customary to "pass the basket" to collect the individual voluntary donations and uphold 7th Tradition.

We "pass the basket" to give everyone a chance to help support our group, Intergroup, and the Fellowship as a whole (WSO). Since passing a basket is not possible on a phone meeting, How To Clear Clutter And Emotional Baggage we encourage individuals to donate regularly by mail or online. Members are encouraged to generously support the 7th Tradition at every meeting they attend.

Individual members please limit your contribution to $3000 per year. CLA WSO will accept a bequest in any amount from the will of a deceased member. It is customary for groups to distribute balances in excess of expenses and How To Clear Clutter And Emotional Baggage prudent reserves to the local Intergroup and to World Service. The 60/40 Plan makes it possible to reach clutterers beyond their doors and between meetings.

We suggest the following customary distribution split be made whenever suits each group's needs monthly or quarterly: 60% - to your local Intergroup, to Clutterers Anonymous World Service Organization;if there is no Intergroup, then the suggestion is 100%  For instance, How To Clear Clutter And Emotional Baggage they forget that they don't have the money or space for the item, or that they already have 3 or 4 of the same thing.

When faced with the idea of throwing it away, hoarders have different thoughts than most other people. All their thoughts center on what they will lose (e.g., opportunity, How To Clear Clutter And Emotional Baggage information, identity) or how bad they will feel (e.g., distress, guilt) while none of the thoughts focus on the benefits of getting rid of the item.

Saving the item, or putting off the decision, allows them to escape this bad experience. In this way people become conditioned to hoard. How much truth is there to the common wisdom of hoarding being a response to deprivation?Although some people attribute their hoarding to living through a period of extreme deprivation, How To Clear Clutter And Emotional Baggage our research has failed to find a link between being deprived of things early in life and later hoarding behavior.

We do suspect there is a connection between hoarding and traumatic experiences or chaotic or disruptive living circumstances earlier in life.Hoarding has been considered to be a kind of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), but are there any differences? Yes. In fact, How To Clear Clutter And Emotional Baggage only about 1 in 5 people with hoarding problems report any significant OCD symptoms like checking or cleaning rituals.

There are also some other important differences. In OCD, obsessions are experienced as intrusive and unwanted, and the symptoms are always accompanied by distress. But in hoarding, How To Clear Clutter And Emotional Baggage owning things often produces pleasant feelings of safety and comfort, and acquiring can even produce euphoric feelings.

In fact, the distress we see in hoarding comes from the accumulated clutter as a whole or from thinking about discarding things. There also appear to be differences in the brains of people with hoarding problems compared to those who suffer from OCD. For these reasons, How To Clear Clutter And Emotional Baggage many scientists who study hoarding have recommended that it be classified as a distinct disorder separate from OCD.

Is it true that depression is a common problem for hoarders? Yes. In our research we find that more than half of people with hoarding problems are clinically depressed. However, How To Clear Clutter And Emotional Baggage the depression does not seem to cause the hoarding, although it might be a result of hoarding, especially when the clutter interferes with people's ability to function and they feel embarrassed and ashamed.
